The Discovery Project

Discovery Project  -  Year 12 Mrs Evans

Task overview

You will be researching a media theory in preparation for your A2 studies. It is then up to you to present an artefact for the theory in a creative way.

How this will be done

Your teacher will give you the title of a theory and you will look into it. It is up to you whether you work alone or in a group/pair. You will then produce an artefact to show your understanding of the theory. This will be presented to the group at the end of the discovery project.

How this will help me

Media theory is an integral part of your A2 studies. You need to have a good understanding of them before you embark upon the course next year. They are central to both the coursework and examination.

The reason for the production of an artefact is, firstly, to allow you to challenge yourself by using technologies that you wouldn’t normally attempt for a graded piece of coursework (you may find that you are really good at web design/film editing). Secondly, it is to provide you with something else to present at your University interviews. An understanding of theory and a creative approach will be extremely impressive. Finally, you may decide to develop this idea further for your coursework at A2.

How lessons will be shaped

You will be expected to report to your teacher once a week with your ideas. You will be expected to come together as a class at the end, to present your final artefact and talk about the theory you have studied.

What will happen if I fail to do this project

You will jeopardise your chances of moving on to A2 Media Studies as it will demonstrate a lack of commitment to the course. You will be at a disadvantage next year, as you will not understand the theory to begin with and will give yourself extra work to do, at a time when you will already have a lot of coursework. This is an ideal time to get started on this.

Coursework

Please remember to comment on your targets. It is really important for me to know where you are.

You need to make sure your draft work is with me by Friday.

In addition to this, you need to copy, paste and print out from your blog your best 5-6 piece of planning work as you will need a portfolio to send off to the exam board as well as your blog link. This could include storyboards etc.

Upload videos to youtube/vimeo and put them on your blogsite

Write up your evaluation, ready for when you return.

Remember, we only have two weeks when you get back from the holiday, and everything needs to be ready for the first lesson back!

Any questions, comment below or come and find me in the office or in J1

Happy holiday

Evaluation

MEST 2 Evaluation

 General Guidelines

Write in word. This is a technical, precise piece, not an English essay. Think of it in terms of a technical manual. Write your name, centre number and centre name in the header, so that they appear on both pages. In the footer write the total word count (this can be done by going to the tools menu). Add page numbers by going to the insert menu. Do notexceed the 1,500-word limit by more than 10%. This piece is worth 20% of the total coursework mark so don’t groan if we feel redrafting is necessary, THIS EVALUATION IS VITAL! The piece must be completed by Tuesday April 22nd. It is only 1,500 words, but these 1,500 words must be carefully chosen, there is no room for waffle if you want a good mark.

Paragraph 1 (target 150 words)

State clearly which brief you chose to address and your intentions with each piece. Identify your specific role in your first production (do not state that you ‘helped out generally’, but be clear about what you did, and how you went about it) and again address your intentions (what you planned to do!). Then focus on your magazine article or website and what you hoped to achieve.

Paragraph 2, 3 & 4? (target 700 words max).

Write a separate paragraph for each production piece. Again focusing on how you have attempted to achieve the objectives of the brief. For example, explain how your music promotional video targeted ‘.... a largely youth-based market but are keen to promote the act in a way that will appeal to more than just a niche audience,’ or how your magazine article(shas promotes your artist/band. Refer to your research when making their decisions (I discovered that band websites usually have... so I used.../ In Kerrang I saw most images were....so I took this idea and....).

For both pieces you need to discuss the media (key) concepts, in particular audience, and how these relate to your production. State clearly who is the production aimed at and how did it achieve this?

Paragraph 5 (target 400 words)

Perform a more detailed textual analysis of the production; what was in the piece, how did it work, how could it have been improved? Clearly explain what were its strengths and weaknesses? Why? For example, you might want to emphasise your use of sound/camera shots/setting etc and how the texts attempted to appeal. How does it compare with real media texts?

Paragraph 6 (target 200 words)

Readdress the decisions you made during production, why? Did you make any changes, if so why? What did you learn along the way what were some of the significant changes you made.

Paragraph 7 (target 50 words)

Reference to the 3rd platform. Give a brief outline of two/three of the main features you would have included and how these adhere to the brief.

Conclusion

What have you learnt from the project from research to final productions? Refer to independent learning, time keeping, forms and conventions of media texts and the technologies and skills you have gained.
